How can being tough be different from being mean?
What can separate them when they look about the same is that being mean isn’t necessary and for the good.
Christians, have you ever heard anyone talk about differences between being tough and being mean? It is a good lesson for Christians and non-Christians alike. It first needs to be understood that they aren’t synonymous.
Being tough and being mean can seem the same at times, and that is why people can confuse them. Tough involves being strong and making difficult decisions in challenging situations. A tough action can seem mean because it can involve consequences and leave others with hard feelings. What can separate them when they look about the same is that being mean isn’t necessary and for the good.
For example, you might have had two bosses who both seemed tough, but their "toughness" seemed different. You know they both were strong and decisive in a difficult work environment. However, you also know one of them often cut people who didn’t deserve to be cut and didn’t need to be cut.
