"Too Deep"?

People can evade a question or point you have about something they said that you see as prejudiced or harmful in some other way by making you feel that what they said and think goes beyond what you could understand. 

By giving this type of response, they not only evade an answer to a point or question you have that would make them admit to and fault their own prejudice, etc. but can also make you ponder what they know and feel that you don’t.

Sometimes, when talking to someone about something they said and think that you see as prejudiced or harmful in some other way, they will try to evade a point you have about it by responding in a way that makes you feel that what they think is deeper than what you could understand.  By giving this type of response, they not only evade an answer to a point or question you have that would make them admit to and fault their own prejudice, etc. but can also make you ponder what they know and feel that you don’t. This could also cause you to wonder if you were the one who was really wrong.

Consider an employee at an advertising company who walks into a room with her colleague for a conference.  Her colleague tells her he “doesn’t want to sit with the new guy who told us about his Church yesterday.”  She responds by saying that she doesn’t see that as a reason not to sit at his table, but he responds in a way that makes her feel that what he thinks goes beyond what she could understand.

It needs to be kept in mind that a Christian or non-Christian can feel something deeply without being able to put it into words very well at the time or even after thinking more about it, but the topic presented here refers to an evasive technique that helps someone avoid admitting that their words and thinking was prejudiced etc. and faulting it while possibly making you feel that you are the one who should question what you say and think.  The “too-deep-for-you” response is also condescending because it makes you out to be “less intelligent,” “less experienced,” and “less deep” than they are.
