Thoughtfully In Command Of Our Minds

We need to be careful about just going along with our natural reactions and what people around us are doing.

For example, we shouldn’t laugh at someone just because everyone else is and the situation seems to be funny at first glance.

Christians,

We should not allow our actions to simply be a product of our surroundings and natural reactions.  For example, we shouldn’t laugh at someone just because everyone else is and the situation seems to be funny at first glance.  We need to be in control of our minds, actively thinking about what is happening in relation to our beliefs.

Consider a coworker who brings up a concern at a meeting that a wet floor sign is never put out after the floor has been mopped.  Someone behind you jokingly whispers that she always has a complaint.  This strikes you as funny at first because she often does bring up a concern, so you start laughing as soon as other people start to.

It must have hurt her feelings being laughed at, and what made it worse was that she was laughed at for trying to keep people safe.  An elderly customer who slips on a wet floor would wind up in a lot of pain—it wouldn’t be unlikely for there to be broken bones either; it is a situation that could easily be avoided as well. You wouldn't have started laughing if you had thought about that.
