Taking Advantage of People's Generosity

Writer's picture: Paul CondelloPaul Condello

A lesson to be remembered is to not take advantage of people who are being generous.

Imagine your boss is giving you about five to ten minutes more of a break than she agreed upon, even though the regular time was fair in the first place.

Christians,

A lesson not to be forgotten is to not take advantage of someone’s generosity.  It can be natural to try to do it, but it wrongs someone who is trying to do you a favor.  It can happen in many contexts, including work.

Imagine your boss is giving you about five to ten minutes more of a break than she agreed upon, even though the regular time was fair in the first place.  Some employees, seeing that the boss is willing to bend their own rules a little, can be inclined to ask for even more time beyond that.  Then, there are even others who might get angry if the boss says no.

However, trying to push on the boss’s generosity might just result in the boss maintaining the regular break time in the future to avoid futher problems.  It is also a poor way to pay back a boss who is trying to make her employee’s work a good experience.  It shows little gratitude and can also be hurtful.
