Authentically liberal-minded insight sees beyond what much of society says is good when it is hurting people.

This insight sees through labels and false reasoning at whether someone is being treated fairly.

One hallmark of a person who is authentically liberal-minded (the word is used in the general, non-political sense here) is having the uncommon insight that allows them to see that what much of society says is good really isn’t when it is hurting people.  This insight sees through labels and false reasoning at whether someone is being treated fairly.  Labeling thinking as "liberal" that isn't compassionate and open-minded doesn't make it so.

Of course, an authentically liberal-minded person is not going to be thought of as “liberal” or “progressive” by much of mainstream society either when much of mainstream society has decided that “liberal” or “progressive” thinking involves racism and religious intolerance, for example.  An authentically liberal-minded person is going to stand up for someone who isn’t being treated right even when that puts them on the “wrong side” of many people’s perception of right and wrong. An authentically liberal-minded person doesn't see wrong simply as a matter of popular opinion. 

An authentically liberal-minded person is going to stand up for a person that is being spoken of disparagingly because of their race when people thought of as “liberals” by much of society consider it appropriate to speak poorly of certain races.  An authentically liberal-minded person is going to stand up for someone who is being silenced because of their religious beliefs even when it is considered a “progressive” idea to silence them.  An authentically liberal-minded person doesn’t stand up for those people to follow the crowd or be praised by them anyway.
