An Attitude That Reinforces One's Own Oppression

Writer: Paul CondelloPaul Condello

Christians can fail to support each other because they see it as a waste of effort.

However, this attitude can be a big part of what makes it hard for Christians to rise above the oppression they face—it can be the attitude of other Christians that stands in the way.

Christians,

Imagine a student listens to a friend in class give a Christian opinion on a topic being discussed, but he says to himself that it is better not to say anything in agreement—he sees it as a lost battle from the start and feels somewhat condescendingly that his friend is probably just going to be made fun of by classmates for speaking up. It is this attitude that can be a big part of what makes it hard for Christians to rise above the oppression they face—it can be the attitude of other Christians that stands in the way.

When many Christians have this attitude, one voice might still be heard, but that one voice that tries can grow tired and then maybe no longer be heard. That can be the cycle. This is not to say that one voice cannot change many hearts but instead that purposely ignoring a voice helps drown it out.

This is not a matter of trying to be argumentative either. It is a matter of helping Christians feel that it is worth supporting each other. Even if it is only the two Christians in a room who agree with each other, at least the one has the support of the other in friendship.  On the contrary, Christians shouldn’t condescendingly look down on the one who tries to speak up, thinking they are only wasting their time. Over time, when others see that the Christians around them stand up for their ideas together, a Christian voice among them will be given more credence.
